Review: Parkside

Parkside came to Austin amidst much fanfare–how many nice restaurants are in the midst of the 6th Street strip? It also has a sweet rooftop patio. A friend of mine was in from Dallas and had met a friend of owner/executive chef Shawn Cirkiel who said he HAD TO GO, so we went a couple of weekends ago. Since then, I’ve been trying to write a review, and I’ve been struggling.

I think the issue I’m having is that I liked the food. It was good. The scallops were even delicious. The ceviche was a steal at half price ($4) on a Friday night. The asparagus was seasoned very nicely. The fish I nibbled was good. It was all good. But it was very expensive, and it was small portions, and I just can’t rave about it.

Our waiter was good. My drink (some weird “old-timey” thing with an egg white in it) was really, really good. And cheap for a specialty martini–$7.50. But nothing stood out. Not the decor, not the service, not really even the food. But I also can’t stress enough that it was GOOD.

I think what I’m trying to say here is to go for a snack and have the specials–the half price ceviche, the half price oysters–throw in a specialty cocktail, relax on the rooftop patio, and you’re going to have a great time, a much better time than I did. I’d go so far as to say I’d be willing to try it again if my experience was going to be apps/cocktail/roof!
