I’m Back! And it’s Commemorate Rice Day!

… so the day is almost over because I’ve been catching up on work (and workouts, damn does CrossFit suck when you’ve missed a week … and thank you to the mountains we hiked, who are the only reason I didn’t DIE during today’s workout), but I’m still going to share with you that TODAY, October 12, is officially Rice Day.

This is the first official Rice Day, as all 47,000 of us alumni bond together to take on alumni communities around the world, from schools like UT who have more attendees in a year than we have alumni, and wave our nerd flag high, sporting our golden graduation rings and navy blue sweatshirts that say “RICE,” causing anyone who doesn’t know who we are to wonder how much we love the food group … yes, it’s a proud day for our little community of owls.

From the Office of Alumni Affairs:
When the Rice Institute opened its doors in 1912, our founders declared to the world that Rice would stand among its premiere institutions of learning.  Educators and leaders from around the globe were invited to opening ceremonies on October 10-12.  Now, nearly 100 years later, our alumni are living testaments to the quality of the institution, its educational accomplishments, and groundbreaking research.  As we near our centennial in 2012, I encourage you to share the university’s history, accomplishments, and aspirations with those where you live, work, and socialize every day.

On Rice Day, I encourage Rice alumni everywhere to join me in wearing your Rice ring, a Rice hat, pin, or T-shirt, fly a Rice banner—or in whatever way suits your personal style, to become a living symbol for Rice.  Our alumni population may not be as large as at other institutions, but our spirit is still as vibrant.  Any time is a good time to share your knowledge of and appreciation for Rice, but we encourage your participation especially every October.

Hoot! Hoot! Gooooo Rice!
