All About Film Friday

Jim from the Office Makes a Movie

John Krasinki’s directorial debut is Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, a play he discovered while studying playwriting at Brown University. Not only did the experience spark Krasinski’s interest in the late David Foster Wallace’s caustic exploration of the nature of men, it was also the moment that made him want to be an actor.

Krasinski says:

I had done a couple of plays and joined a sketch comedy group, which was a blast and some of the most fun I had at school. But I never expected to do anything with it. Some of my friends, whose work I admired, were being asked to be a part of this staged reading, called BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN. And I remember feeling that there was something really unique and different going on with this reading. “And then it became more like that age old dilemma of “Oh man! I really hope I get to sit at the cool kids’ table!

The Austin premiere at the Alamo Ritz will feature a special appearance and Q & A with Krasinski following the film. Limited run at the Alamo Ritz. Krasinki’s adaptation stars Timothy Hutton, Ben Shenkman, Christopher Meloni, Will Arnett, Bobby Cannavale, Max, Minghella, Will Forte, and Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie).

So what is Brief Interviews with Hideous Men actually about? The synopsis: When Sara Quinn’s boyfriend leaves her with little explanation, she is left looking for answers. A doctoral candidate in anthropology at a prestigious East Coast university, she thinks she can remedy both her heartache and her academic challenges with a new research project and begins conducting a series of interviews with men. As she records the astonishing and disquieting experiences of various subjects, Sara discovers much more about men—and herself—than she bargained for.
