I Don’t Like Halloween But Here Are Some Fun Foods & Costumes Anyway

Halloween is my least favorite dress up holiday because it’s so broad: you can be literally anything and you’re on theme. I abhor people asking “so what are you?” Nope. I want a theme and to creatively riff off of that.

Alas, I am apparently in the minority and am actually attending a Halloween party this year—well, Hollaween but whateva. So I’m getting, begrudgingly, a little more into the spirit. Below, the three fun foods I brought, my costume, and several other costume ideas.

Boozy Worms

So gross, so awesome. Recipe here but here are my tips:

  • PUT THE STRAWS UPSIDE DOWN aka with the bendy part in the jar, not at the top. Sort of a duh thing but I did it wrong.
  • You can buy straws at the dollar store but maybe don’t go at noon on the Friday before Halloween is celebrated—the line was literally 20 people deep with one checker
  • I used 1 cup of booze in place of 1 cup of water + 1/4 cup of booze in place of the cream for a total of 2 c water, 1 1/4 c peach vodka, and 1/2 c whipping cream
  • Use the whole package of gelatin (not one packet)
  • Squeezing the worms out is easier if you hold them over hot water and sort of steam them but your thumbs will still be sore and probably dyed red
  • There will be a lot of extra boozy jello … no idea what you’re supposed to do with that but I kept it … ideas welcome.

Witches Brooms

Uh, stick a stick pretzel in a mini reese’s and call it a party pleaser—who doesn’t love sweet + salty?

Barfing Pumpkin

Hilarious but I forgot to take a pic. Here was my inspiration.

Faux Celeb Halloween Costumes

My costume this year? A copout, but a ridiculous one that more than makes up for my laziness. This inflatable unicorn (+ this tee for when the unicorn deflates, which it will even with a portable battery charger).

My three favorite ideas this year (all DIY and REALLY easy):

My costume pinterest board (how embarrassing) is here.
