This week I have been called both a bulldog and a karen, with basically the same meaning but obviously very different connotations. I just call it tenacity, and it’s a part of my personality that I very much like—it has set me up for success in an overall corporate world that still values masculine-style aggression, forcefulness, and confidence.
I’m not (too) proud to admit that it may not serve me so well in my personal life, where the boundary blurs. While tenacity—for a person, about the relationship—is foundational, the flip side is perhaps confrontational, and the same passion that drives me to relentlessly pursue an outcome can be, well, overwhelming if misplaced. With my Handsome Helpful Humanitarian Warrior. Who not-all-that-gently reminded me of that last night.
I am grateful for this.
Mostly.
I am grateful for a strong relationship. I am grateful for open, direct, honest communication, not just with him but with my new team, with friends, with my family.
This week has brought a lot of communication challenges my way, and it’s always interesting for someone who has long communicated for a living to really get a chance to examine how and what she’s saying. I’ve always been a writer. I, apparently, have some work to do on being a talker.
