Grass-Fed Meat

I eat only free-range, grass-fed meat, free-range chicken, and wild-caught fish. I’ve been eating this way for over 3 years, and I think it’s important for health, happiness, and the environment.

When I started CrossFit about a year ago, the big thing was the Zone Diet. Well, there’s no way in hell I’m measuring and weighing my food, so the smaller trend was the Paleo Diet. I went for that during the Spartan 300 Challenge last summer, and it wasn’t too much of a stretch from my already-pretty-healthy diet.

Most people agree that eating grassfed meat is ideal, but people differ in their degree of importance versus other sacrifices. To me, as I said above, grassfed is the only way to go for health and wellness.

Dr. Mercola says:

Grass is a cow’s natural food. Corn and other grains are not.

When cows eat grains their body composition changes. Most importantly for you, these changes include an alteration in the balance of essential fats.

Grass-Fed Cows have Radically Different Nutritional Benefits

Studies by Dr. Loren Cordain, author of The Paleo Diet, have shown that both the overall level of fat and the level of omega-6 fat are much higher in grass-fed cows than those fed grains.

Why is this important?

Because our modern diet typically contains significantly skewed ratios of omega-3 and highly processed omega-6 fats which is a major contributor to ill health, and eating grass-fed beef is one way to avoid that imbalance in your food.

For example, a previous study by North Dakota State University on the nutritional differences between grass-fed and grain-fed bison found that grass-fed bison had omega-6 to omega-3 ratios of 4 to 1, whereas the grain-fed bison had ratios of 21 to 1. Additional studies by others clearly show that the longer cattle are fed grain, the greater the fatty acid imbalance.

As you may remember, the ideal ratio between these two fats is 1 to 1, so clearly, the grass-fed variety is far closer to the ideal.

Additionally, since grass-fed beef has been raised sans unnecessary antibiotics and growth hormones, they also have other added health benefits.
