Food Trucks! Aspen/Austin Connections! 90210! Say la V!

So much excitement for food trucks!

Aspen is jam-packed with amazing, talented people. As is Austin, so it’s no surprise that two talented Aspen women made their way from the mountain town to the state capitol. This might not be all that exciting except that I KNOW them! I was thrilled to get a press release today announcing that my friend Vilma Mazaite and Executive Chef Allison Jenkins are opening a food truck, Say laV, as a preview to their restaurant at 7th and Comal slated to come in the fall. The truck is behind the construction site, serving up French and Mediterranean cuisine Tuesday-Thursday from 7pm to midnight and Friday –Saturday from 7pm to 2am, with hours expected to increase as summer approaches.

Texas native Allison Jenkins was the Executive Chef at Ajax Tavern in Aspen, where she met Vilma Mazaite, an advanced sommelier. While their resto is being built, not only are they food-trucking it, but they’ve hosted a few Wine in Heels events (remember Vilma did those in Aspen too) and will be at the upcoming Austin Food and Wine Festival in Butler Park on Saturday and Sunday April 27th and 28th.

A sneak peek at the menu: Pork Belly “BLT” with Tomato Jam served on a Baguette; Corned Beef Tongue Sandwich on Rye with Brussels Sprouts and mustard; Tarragon Pickled Eggs; Spinach Hummus Tartine with Baby Carrots and Radishes; Soft Polenta with Mushroom Ragu; and Sweet Potato Doughnut Holes—using local ingredients. Prices range from $5-$8.

In other food truck news straight out of an episode of the new 90210 where Naomi plans a food truck off, ATX Brands is excited to announce the first annual Trailer Truck-off, where prospective chefs will compete for a chance to run their own food truck. Hosted at the Historic Scoot Inn’s backyard on Saturday, May 4, the winner of the Trailer Truck-off will be decided based on originality, taste and presentation. The winner of the challenge will be determined day-of and will be awarded a six-month contract to operate the Zorro Food trailer.

To enter, contestants must by 18 years of age or older and must email their name, bio and concept proposal, which includes an original concept, menu and business plan, for the food trailer to TrailerTruckOff@GiantNoise.com by April 30. ATX Brands CEO Doug Guller will select seven contestants for the challenge and will be joined on the panel of judges by some of Austin’s finest foodies.Contestants are required to provide their own ingredients and items that need to be prepared, present a menu and prepare one signature dish at the competition based on their concept.

Think you can win? Let me know if you enter, I’d love to profile you!
