Reception: Artist Eva Malhotra

Saturday, April 302-5 p.m., Newport Beach Central Library Friends Room
Meet artist Eva Malhotra and learn how she creates the unique works of art that are currently on exhibit in the Central Library. Is she a painter or a sculptor?  Malhotra combines a variety of techniques to create her art, including carving, scraping, and overlapping, and re-applying remnants of paint that has been carved and/or scraped off.

Her work is on display at the Newport Beach Public Library, and it is stunning.

You know how you know I’m getting older?

Art.

84bLike tearing pages out of magazines and ticky-tacking them to my wall no longer counts as art. Or decor for that matter. Like I pay money for photos to be printed first on gatorboard, then I graduated to canvas. Like I suddenly think these paintings (? sculptings? paintures?) are rad.

So as I am now adulting, I am happy to know that Malhorta used wood panels, which she covers with twelve to fifteen layers of colored paints. Then she takes printmaking tools–cutters, carvers, gouges, and knives–and makes marks on the surface. The result is this awesome, tactile, meditative experience.

And I felt that just looking at them in a public library (albeit the gorgeous NBPL).

Now if only I could figure out how (to afford) to buy a piece.
