Is 98% lean ground beef grass-fed?

Or, my mom is awesome and one of those people who will actually email to ask questions. Paleo/Primalists can hush with their “98% is too lean!” bs before this post, because I agree and grass-fed beef fat is perfectly fine if not good for you, but my mom likes the super-duper lean kind and this is why I grew up eating tacos that were super-super dry and didn’t know ground beef could make soft soft tacos until I began to cook it for myself. I digress.

Email from mom:

I have been buying the 98% lean ground beef from Randalls for MANY years.  Years ago I ordered tenderloin steaks directly from Springerhill Ranch until you no longer did that.  I have always wondered why the 98% lean ground beef package does not say “grassfed” but the 93% lean does.  I asked two people in the meat department today at Randalls and they thought the 98% was not grassfed because it does not say it on the package.  I believe it is grassfed because your website says all your cattle are grassfed, and because years ago Steve told me that it was.  So I am just wondering why you do not put it on the package of 98% lean ground beef?

Response! emphasis mine, added.

Hi Cindy – Thanks for taking the time to email me. Yes, our 98% is Grass Fed. The 98% is so lean that I did not label as Grass Fed because Grass Fed beef is all about the positive fatty acid profile of the beef. Since there is not fat in that product I chose to just let it stand on it’s own as a Heart Healthy animal protein. Everything you say on a food label has a price tag, so I just keep it simple to help control cost of production. FYI: Cattle out of a fed lot would be to fat to make 98% Lean ground beef.

Thanks for supporting Springerhill Ranch!

Wanted to share because it’s so interesting to hear from the actual producers in the industry. Research your brands, eat grass-fed beef (they have a great page on why), the end.

PS – we don’t have Randalls in SoCal, but you can find Springerhill Ranch at Sprouts.
